  Ceramic pulley lagging is a specialized wear-resistant surface applied to the head or tail pulleys of conveyor belts. It consists of a durable rubber sheet (the "lagging") into which hundreds of small, ultra-hard ​​ceramic tiles or inserts​​ are vulcanized.
The primary purpose is to dramatically increase the friction between the conveyor pulley and the belt, which improves traction and prevents belt slippage. It also protects the pulley shell from wear and abrasion.

1.Ceramic Tile Lagging:​​ The most common type. Ceramic tiles are vulcanized into the rubber sheet in a close-packed pattern. Offers the highest level of abrasion resistance.
2.​​Ceramic Ring Lagging (or "Spiral" Lagging):​​ Ceramic rings are vulcanized in a spiral pattern around a rubber-covered pulley. This design is excellent for scraping and cleaning the belt, making it ideal for tail pulleys where cleaning is a priority.

Important Considerations & Potential Drawbacks

  • ​​Initial Cost:​​ Higher upfront cost compared to rubber lagging.
  • ​​Belt Wear:​​ The aggressive grip can cause increased wear on the belt's underside (the pulley cover) if the belt is not properly tensioned or if the system has tracking problems. It is generally not recommended for use with fabric (textile) belts for this reason; it is best suited for steel cord belts or belts with a thick, durable pulley cover.
  • ​​Professional Installation:​​ Must be installed correctly. The ceramic surface must be oriented properly (ceramics facing the belt), and the pulley must be precisely crowned or tracked to avoid damaging the belt.
  • ​​Not for Every Pulley:​​ It is typically overkill for non-drive, low-tension pulleys like take-up units or bend pulleys.
